In Class Assignment: How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay

Step 1:  Generate a list of ten things that you could compare and contrast.  It could be a living thing, a non living thing or an abstract idea.

Living:
sea creatures birds insects ….

Non Living:
stationary                    cars boats….

Abstract

sadness                      anger love...

Step 2: Choose one topic  and refine it.

Sea creatures:   white shark and dolphin

Step 3: Create a gathering grid.

Focus on things  that make your topic different or similar.

These questions help you direct your research.  If you don’t find many answers then change your questions.

Characteristics
Question Lions Cheetahs
1.What is the size?
2.How do their shapes differ?
3.What colours exist?
4.What special features do they
have?
5.What is unique about their hair?
6. Where are they found?
7. Why do they eat certain things?
8. How  are there in the world?
9.  How long do they live?
10.  Can they be domesticated?

Step 4: Write a topic sentence or thesis. This is an argument with a controlling idea and support.

Tacos and pizza + seem different but a have a lot in common= Tacos and pizza might seem totally different but they actually have a lot in common.

Thesis

*Killer whales and sharks are similar yet they are quite unique.
*There are two countries such as Australia and Canada that are very much the same, but they are completely different.

Step 5: Your essay will have an introduction, a body, and conclusion. The intro is one paragraph; the body will be two paragraphs and the conclusion will be one paragraph.

Step 6: Be sure the body of your paragraph is broken into a chart.

Step 7: Work on your introductory paragraph going from general to specific.
Cars→  Japanese→ Toyota cars→  Toyota Corolla→ Toyota Corolla 1.8 model → 1997 Toyota Corolla 1.8 L model

Popsicles and Ice Creams  (This is a working title not a final title.)

Summertime is perfect for eating desserts. Whenever I am playing outside with my friends, my mother calls out “Who wants a cold treat?”  Immediately, we run over and my mother has us choose between popsicles or ice cream. It arguable that ice cream and popsicles are similar yet different.
Step 8: You reword your conclusion by rewriting your introductory paragraph from specific to general.

light purple cotton long sleeve shirt→ purple cotton long sleeve shirt→ cotton long sleeve shirt→ long sleeve shirt→  shirt

Popsicles and ice cream are unique, but they are also quite distinct.  After dinner or after lunch or even after a hot day, people enjoy a very sweet dessert or even a treat.  There is a huge selection of sweets to choose from in this world.

Step 9: write a rough copy, improve the title, and proof read your work.

Step 10: Submit. /20
